Flat feet

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is flattened or almost absent. In a person with flatfoot, the sole of the foot rests flat on the ground when standing. As a result, the foot may appear wider and the weight distribution on the foot is uneven.
Flatfoot can be congenital (present from birth) or acquired during life. Causes of acquired flatfoot include foot injuries, aging or diseases that weaken the muscles or ligaments of the foot.
Causes of flat feet
Flat feet can have a variety of causes, including the following:
  1. Congenital: Some people are born with flat feet because of an abnormality in the bone or muscle structure of the foot. This can be due to genetic factors or problems during fetal development.
  2. Acquired: Flat feet can also be acquired during the course of one's life due to various factors, the most important of which are:
    • Foot injury: It is important to have your feet evaluated by a podiatrist, as a bone injury or chronic tendonitis (posterior tibial dysfunction), can alter the structure of the arch of the foot and result in flat feet.
    • Neuromuscular diseases: Some neuromuscular diseases, such as muscular dystrophy or cerebral palsy, can weaken the muscles and ligaments of the foot and cause flat feet.
    • Wear and tear and aging: over time, the muscles and ligaments of the foot can weaken and cause the arch to collapse, resulting in flat feet.
    • Overweight: Excess weight can increase pressure on the feet and weaken muscles and ligaments, which can lead to flat feet.
    • Poor posture habits: Poor posture or improper walking can affect the structure of the foot and lead to flat feet.
It is important to note that in some cases, flat feet may not cause any symptoms and may not require treatment. However, if you experience symptoms such as pain, fatigue or instability when walking or standing, it is advisable to consult a podiatrist in Blainville, Quebec to determine the cause of the problem and find the best treatment option.
